Can I Have Anxiety And Faith At The Same Time?

This very question may hit a nerve. The most obvious answer is absolutely not! If we are truly faithful and we walk by faith and not by sight then how could there ever be room for anxiety?
Everyday I pray for the courage to live another day – to do all that I can do to not just make it through but to be a blessing to others and to live a faith filled life. Unfortunately, I must admit, that my faith does waver. It waivers because it’s hard to keep going when the circumstances around us may show regression instead of progression. When things aren’t going my way, it is sometimes tough to see through to the other side and embrace the notion that “this too shall pass”. My prayer life doesn’t stop but my faith is sometimes halted.
Why?
There’s this “unwanted tenant” that sometimes moves into our spirit. This unwanted tenant’s name is Anxiety. Anxiety will make you worry about the most trivial things – it will even make you second-guess any and all of your choices. Anxiety will wake you up early in the morning and keep you up late at night. Anxiety likes to have conversations with you that stir up feelings of regret, fear, indecisiveness, pain, dread, anticipation, disappointment – anything negative, Anxiety will dredge it up! It’s often the fear of the unknown and what we dream will happen is normally much worse than what actually happens. Anxiety ultimately kills our joy.
So, can anxiety and faith live together harmoniously? Yes, they can live together.
Do they live together harmoniously? No way! Our faith tells us that things will work out. We might not know how, we might not know when but things ALWAYS work out. Through prayer, we can increase our faith. Through prayer, we can cast out anxiety. Anxiety is a feeling, and we know we can’t trust our feelings. We have to be rooted in what we know to be true. We know that God is faithful to deliver us from harm. We know that trouble may come, but joy comes in the morning. We know that God gives us the strength to endure.
It is natural to have some worry—some anxiety. But we should not allow anxiety a root in our spirit. Our faith is what will sustain us. It is the spiritual food that gives us our strength to press onward and upward. Kick anxiety to the curb and pull up a chair for faith to come in, have a seat, and make itself at home!
